Because of the lack of published trowel and masonry tool histories, the information here is based on other sources that may be less reliable and certainly are incomplete. These include eBay and tools that I purchase myself that are the starting points for my research. I will write what I know as I learn it. History of Charles Monk Foundry Molding Tools

Charles Monk, 190 16th St. and 83 18th St., Brooklyn, NY was a major US manufacturer of molder's and plasterer's tools. Molding tools are usually identified as "C MONK" or "CM MONK". I have scanned a Charles Monk catalog, date unknown but estimated about 1900. By the early 1950s, C. Monk had moved to Geneva, Illinois, and was still operating in 1958.

  1. I have something that looks almost identical to the CM Monk foundry molders tool in your picture. Its 12" long and made of brass. My is marked J.MARRIOTT. It has a large spoon or mold on one end and a smaller one on the other end. It has 4 lines scored into the handle. I wish I could send you a picture of it. Do you know when these were made?
